Book Review: “Favored” by Priscilla B Shuler

This is a bold, controversial, yet undeniably thought-provoking read.

As fallible mortals, we are all prone to making mistakes—sometimes refusing to face the truth or hiding behind a façade of denial. Shuler’s Favored shines a light on these very human failings, weaving them into a narrative that, at first glance, might seem far-fetched or exaggerated. But upon deeper reflection, the story reveals itself to be a stark portrayal of the same struggles faced by those who have been hurt and continue to endure pain, yet still strive to survive and thrive amidst life’s harshest realities.

The novel raises difficult questions—questions that many of us may shy away from, yet are impossible to ignore. It prompts us to confront uncomfortable truths not just about the characters, but about ourselves. Shuler’s story, though controversial in its themes, feels like a mirror to the quiet battles waged by those around us, and perhaps even within us. It’s a tale that challenges, prods, and pushes readers to look beyond the surface and recognise that the questions it poses apply to all of us in some way, whether literally or figuratively.

Some might call Favored polarising, but many great novels have been born from controversy and continue to leave lasting impacts because of it. This is one such book—one that dares to look into the murkier sides of human nature and, in doing so, delivers a powerful, must-read experience.
